About the EPPIE Awards

The EPPIE Awards have been given annually since the first EPIC conference to recognize outstanding achievement in e-publishing.

The categories are judged by members of EPIC, all published authors. After the first round of judging, the works of the finalists are sent to another panel of judges, and winners in all eighteen categories are selected. The winners are announced at the EPIC conference's gala award ceremony at the annual EPICon Convention.

A Public Note Concerning the EPPIES

Recently there are some lists and bloggers spreading rumors that EPPIE entries are not read. These rumors are completely false.

There was an incident of a publisher entering a book that apparently contained plagiarized passages. The plagiarized book was quickly spotted once it got to the judging stage, and eliminated from the competition after the publisher was contacted. It was not judged.

For the record, the job of the EPPIE contest co-ordinators are to accept the books into the contest and to organize the judges. Books are not "pre-read" when accepted so the co-oridinatores would have no knowledge of any plagiarism at that point. The judges read all the books that are entered, every single one. Each book is read by more than one judge, both in the preliminary round and the final round. During the judging is where any questionable book is reported and reviewed by the committee to identify any problems and disqualify any book involving plagiarism, which is what happened in this particular case.

While it is understandable that a statement can be misunderstood, please note that every book is read, several times by different people, but the co-ordinators are charged with assigning the books, not reading them before hand. This is in common with most other book contests.

Unfortunately, the EPPIE contest has no advanced knowledge of what type of books are being submitted, but every effort is made to weed out the bad entries as soon as possible. And this has always been done. Please feel free to pass this information along to any and all lists and bloggers who are mistakenly posting inaccurate and misleading information.
