July 2003 Update from the President . . .
I want to take a moment to say a huge THANK YOU to the scores of EPIC members who sacrifice valuable writing and promotion time in order to advance the cause of EPIC.
It is only through the efforts of folks like you that our organization will truly succeed in becoming the “VOICE OF ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING.”
Like a young child, the electronic publishing industry—and EPIC—are taking their first wobbly baby steps. Will we make miss-steps? Absolutely! But if life has taught me anything it is that the greater sin is attempting nothing. Will we fall flat on our face from time to time? Without a doubt! But to fall is not to fail . . . failing to get up and try again is the only failure.
We are launching several bold and innovative programs in EPIC. As your president, I appreciate the confidence you have expressed in your board by overwhelmingly approving our recent budget.
As of this report we have chosen Thirteen State Coordinators. We are still searching for more. When volunteers are called for in your state, I urge you to “get involved” and step forward.
Your board has just approved our first State Project. EPIC will have a booth at the FLORIDA WRITERS CONFERENCE in Orlando, FL on October 24-26. Courtney Mroch, our Florida State Coordinator and her gang of merry members, will be passing out EPIC literature, answering questions about EPIC, and attempting to recruit new members. Your board has approved $275.00 for the booth, advertising, and misc. expenses involved in this project.
The FLORIDA WRITERS ASSOCIATION is only two years old and already has over 500 members so they are doing something right. We need those who are eligible as members of EPIC. If you are an EPIC member and plan to attend this conference, drop Courtney a note and volunteer to help man our booth.
Terri Schaefer, our Chairman of EPICON2004 is about to kick off her promotional plans for this year’s EPIC conference in Oklahoma City. Unless you have been involved in the planning of one of these extravaganzas, you can’t begin to imagine how many volunteers it takes. If you would be willing to help, drop Terri an e-mail and tell her you’d love to help.
Betty K at and her EPPIE committee will be putting out a call shortly for judges for this year’s EPPIE CONTEST. EVERYONE who enters a book in the contest should be willing to serve as a judge—it’s only fair. It takes a LOT of judges willing to serve to make the EPPIE contest work. When the call goes out, respond with a resounding YES!
Together, we can build EPIC into a professional organization that will have a large impact on the electronic publishing industry. LET’S DO IT! . . . Okay?
Hugs and Happy Trails!
